A-J sweeps team titles, Comer and Respondek medalists at Harrisburg

HARRISBURG — The IHSA cross country postseason got underway with regionals across the state. Runners from the area competed at multiple sites, including Harrisburg.

Pope County senior Ahry Comer made it three straight regional medalists, winning the girls’ race by 35 seconds in a time of 19:17. Anna-Jonesboro’s Jayden Gerardi was second followed by Goreville’s Molly Merrill.

Lady Wildcats held down the next six spots. Aleah Box, Zoe Jones, Reese Jones, Maggie Gooden, Reagan Jones, and Kenzie Miller finished 4-9. With Comer and Merrill not involved in the team scoring, AJ wound up with a perfect score of 15.

In addition to Anna-Jonesboro, Vienna, Massac County, and West Frankfort all will advance to the Benton 1A Sectional as teams. Galatia’s Bailey Downing, Harrisburg’s Maggie Hathaway, and Pope County’s Everly Ryder will advance as well as individuals.

Gallatin County senior Braiden Respondek won the boys’ race by 11 seconds in a time of 17:28. Pope County’s Eason Comer was second followed by Massac County’s Jaydon Miller.

Anna-Jonesboro won the boys team title as well, with Massac County, Vienna, Gallatin County, Hamilton County, NCOE, and Carrier Mills/Stonefort also advancing to the Benton Sectional. Comer, Carmi-White County’s Lane Connaway and Andrew Benham, along with Harrisburg’s Malachi Black and Cameron Carnett all advance as well as individuals.
