Murphysboro Magic: Red Devils stun Harrisburg on final play to reach state semis

HARRISBURG — Gibson Fager connected with Josh Cano for a 31-yard touchdown as time expired to send Murphysboro to the 4A State Semifinals with a 25-20 win at Harrisburg.

The Red Devils’ game-winning score capped a wild final few minutes. Tied at 13-13, a long punt return by Karmelo Abernathy set up Fager’s 10-yard keeper with 3:25 left, giving Murphysboro the lead. The Red Devils missed the extra point, keeping it 19-13.

Harrisburg marched down the field, tying the game on Owen Rann’s 33-yard touchdown pass to Aiden Unthank. Trentn Price added the go ahead extra point, and the Bulldogs had a 20-19 lead with 40.7 seconds to play.

On the final drive, Fager had completions to Cano and a 27-yarder to Sam Herring to set up the game winner.

The Red Devils improve to 11-1 and will no host Rochester (12-0) next Saturday at 3:00 with the winner headed to the State Championship game.

The Bulldogs finish the season 8-4.
