Rochester ends Murphysboro’s season in 4A semifinals

MURPHYSBORO — The Rochester Rockets will play for their ninth football state championship after going on the road and beating Murphysboro 42-14 in the 4A semifinals.

Nolan Mrozowski scored three rushing touchdowns, and Bryan Zulauf threw three touchdowns including two to Mason Jacobs, as the Rockets built a 42-0 lead by late in the third quarter.

Murphysboro scored twice in the fourth quarter as Sam Herring had a 50-yard TD run, and Gibson Fager threw a six-yard TD pass to Karmelo Abernathy.

The Red Devils finished 11-2, equalling the school record for wins in a season.

The Rockets will face Burbank (St. Laurence) in the 4A title game Friday night at 7:00 at Hancock Stadium in Normal. St. Laurence beat Wheaton Academy 31-30 in double overtime in the other semifinal.
