After four highly successful seasons as the boys basketball head coach at his alma mater, David Davis is leaving Meridian to take over as the next head coach at Paducah Tilghman.
The school made the announcement first on social media Wednesday morning.
Davis was a standout player for the Bobcats, helping lead them to a 1A State Runner-Up finish as a senior in 2015. Davis took over as the Bobcats’ head coach in 2021, compiling a 100-43 record while leading the Bobcats to a 1A State Runner-Up finish in 2024 to go along with three regional and three sectional championships. Meridian just missed out on a return trip to state this past season, falling 62-58 in overtime to Effingham St. Anthony in the EIU Supersectional.
Venturing to Southern Illinois to find their boys basketball coach is not new for Tilghman. After more than two decades at Cairo, Bill Chumbler left for Tilghman in 1993 and coached the Blue Tornado for eight seasons. Chumbler averaged 26 wins and won eight district championships, three regional championships and reached the state semifinals twice.
Nashville’s Brad Stieg then won 292 games over 14 seasons as Tilghman’s head coach, leading the team to 10 more district championships and three region championships.
We hope to sit down with Davis later this week and will post our interview when available.
