DU QUOIN — It will be an all-SIRR Mississippi sectional championship game in Du Quoin, as the host Indians will battle surprising West Frankfort Saturday morning with a spot in the state quarterfinals on the line.
The Indians used another strong outing on the mound from Dedick Melvin and pulled away late for a 9-2 win over Harrisburg in the first semifinal.
West Frankfort, a 10 seed in the subsectional, then held on to beat Pinckneyville 2-1 in the second semifinal behind great work from sophomore Chris Samples. Samples went 6 2/3 innings for the win, and drove in the game’s first run with a first inning RBI double.
It was the Redbirds’ 8th straight win, after starting the season 3-15.
The winner Saturday advances to Monday’s SIU 2A Supersectional.
