Malcolm at the Top: Larry to lead Bobcats

MOUNDS — Meridian did not have to look far to find its next head boys basketball coach, just a spot down the bench.

Malcolm Larry is the Bobcats’ new head coach, taking over for David Davis, who resigned last month to take the head coaching position at Paducah Tilghman.

After three-plus seasons as the seventh grade coach, Larry joined Davis’ staff and was part of a wildly successful four years. The Bobcats went 100-43 over those four seasons, including a second place finish at state sandwiched between a pair of supersectional appearances the past three seasons.

Larry says the program will continue its philosophy of tenacious defense and stout scheduling, noting the Bobcats are slated to play 3A teams Centralia and Marion out of the South Seven next year as well as having a home date with Tilghman, a game was already on the schedule before Davis got the job there.

Like Davis, Larry is a Meridian alum, graduating in 2008. He is also a teacher at the elementary school in the district. Larry says the opportunity to now be the head coach is an honor. He says the expectations surrounding the program make for a great problem to have, and that he is “nervous but excited” to take over, quickly adding “it’s a good nervous.”

Jammerio Moore will also be staying from the previous staff to be Larry’s lead assistant coach.
