SESSER — Nick Wingo is in familiar territory. He played at Sesser-Valier for Hall of Fame coaches Ross Babington and John Shadowens and has spent the past six years coaching the Red Devils (now the S-V/Waltonville co-op) alongside Shadowens and another Hall of Famer, Mike Rude.
Now it’s Wingo’s turn to lead the program, following in the footsteps of Shadowens and Rude who both resigned after last season.
The first year Red Devils’ head coach admitted to waking up at 4:30 Monday morning and being at the field by 5:15 for the first day of practice. His club went through a two hour practice on the field followed by weight training and breakfast.
Wingo takes over a program that went 43-18 the past six seasons with five playoff appearances. That includes the 3-3 pandemic season when there was no postseason. SVW has plenty of talent returning including senior quarterback Trace Payne and senior running back Jace Erwin, who rushed for 1275 yards and scored 12 touchdowns as a junior. The Red Devils also will get a boost from the return of senior running back Amiri Rose.
SVW will open the season at home August 29th against Flora.
