BENTON — Benton’s Tabor Field was buzzing with activity Tuesday night, but the Rangers weren’t playing.
At least not a current one.
The school hosted a watch party as Ranger wrestling great (and volunteer assistant coach) Damon “the Nomad” Wilson competed in Dana White’s Contender Series on ESPN.
Benton head wrestling coach Aaron Robinson organized the watch party, which also included music from Ross Worthey and included multiple fundraisers for the wrestling program and to help Wilson with travel expenses. Fans gathered around Tabor Field’s new scoreboard and watched the program on the big screen.
Wilson was a significant underdog, being matched up against Marcio Barbosa, a highly-rated fighter from Brazil. Barbosa staggered Wilson midway through the opening round and finished the job with a TKO at the 4:14 mark.
While the night didn’t go the way the crowd gathered at Tabor had hoped, Robinson says it was still amazing to see their guy on ESPN doing what he loves.
