MURPHYSBORO — The Carbondale Terriers claimed the 107th meeting with Jackson County rival Murphysboro, holding off a Red Devils’ rally to win 21-13. The Terriers now lead the series 59-46 with two ties.

Murphysboro led 6-0 after one quarter, but Carbondale scored and got the extra point to lead 7-6 at halftime. The Terriers added two second half scores to go up 21-6, only to watch the Red Devils respond with a touchdown to make it a one score game.

Murphysboro got the ball back with a chance to tie, but the Terriers’ defense was up to the task, preserving the victory.

Carbondale will welcome Mt. Vernon next week for the Terriers’ home and South Seven opener. Murphysboro will hit the road for another non-conference game at Anna-Jonesboro.
