MARION — Tied at 14-14 after one quarter, the Marion Wildcats exploded for 36 unanswered points in the second quarter and cruised to a 56-21 South Seven opening win over visiting Mt. Vernon.
Callahan Roper continued his hot start to the season completing 18 of 28 for 320 yards and five touchdowns. Junious Thomas hauled in seven of Roper’s passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns.
Marion improves to 2-1 (1-0) and will step back out of conference next week for a road game at Althoff. Mt. Vernon falls to 1-2 (1-1). The Rams will be back home next week to host Collinsville.
