MURPHYSBORO — The Carterville Lions scored twice in the game’s first 6:40 and never looked back on the way to a 28-7 win at Murphysboro to claim the SIRR Ohio championship for the second straight year.
Jamieson Jones and Johnny Miller each tallied six-yard touchdown runs as the Lions built a 14-0 lead after one. Early in the second quarter, Drake Capie’s interception set up the Lions’ third touchdown as Andrew Johnson hit Hayden Harrell with a wide receiver screen that Harrell turned into a 44-yard touchdown.
The Lions added to their 21-0 lead with Miller’s second TD of the night in the quarter. The Red Devils got on the board later in the quarter when Zakhi Huff went 59 yards for a touchdown cutting it to 28-7.
Murphysboro put together a 17-play drive in the fourth quarter but came away with no points as Jones came up with a sack to end it.
The Lions improve to 8-0 and finish 4-0 in the Ohio. They will close the regular season at winless Anna-Jonesboro next week. The Red Devils fall to 4-4 and finish 3-1 in the conference. Murphysboro faces a must win game at 7-1 Du Quoin to get to five wins and become playoff eligible.
