CARBONDALE — In their first year as a program, the Carterville Lady Lions will be sending two to the Girls State Tennis Tournament after sweeping the top two singles spots.

Junior Kara Moore defeated fellow junior Katya Chyzhyk 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to earn medalist honors. Carbondale freshman Margo Simonds beat Waterloo’s Marie Starek 6-2, 6-1 in the third place match. All four are headed to state.

In doubles, Carbondale’s duo of Reagan Moore and Anne-Marie Simond beat Waterloo’s Ava Hemmer and Lily Starek 6-3, 6-2 for medalist honors. Waterloo’s Ella Brown and Lucy Baldwin downed Herrin’s Brooklyn Brandon and Gigi George 6-3, 7-6. All four doubles teams are headed to state.

Waterloo (23) edged Carbondale (21) and Carterville (18) to take home the team sectional championship.
