JOHNSTON CITY — For a half, 16th seeded Wesclin gave top seeded Johnston City all it wanted, but the unbeaten Indians dominated the second half for a 38-25 win in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
Each team scored on all three first half possessions. The Warriors got a pair of touchdowns from Will Waggoner and a third from Cael Madden, but they were unable to convert any two-point conversions. Meanwhile Jace Weaver and Marcus Leitzen scored rushing touchdowns, and Kaden Koenig combined with Wyatt Henderson for a touchdown pass late in the half. The Indians converted all three two-point conversions to lead 24-18 at the half.
Koenig scored on a keeper in the third, and Leitzen added an insurance score in the fourth as Johnston City extended the lead to 38-18. Madden scored Wesclin’s only second half points on the game’s final play for the 38-25 final.
Weaver reached a career milestone for the Indians early in the third quarter. The senior running back surpassed 3000 career yards. He’ll get a chance to add to that total in round two, as Johnston City will pay a visit to Maroa-Forsyth (8-2) in a rematch of last year’s 2A state semifinals.
Wesclin finishes the season 5-5.
