CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Saluki men’s basketball team played only one game last week, but that was enough for Quel’Ron House to earn the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week award.
House, a transfer from Jacksonville State, delivered his best performance of the young season Wednesday, Nov. 12, against Nevada in Reno. The 6-foot sophomore led the Salukis with 22 points and seven assists while logging 44 minutes in the 45-minute overtime thriller. He also grabbed four rebounds. SIU fell, 86-81.
A true point guard, House leads SIU in scoring with a 19.3-point average. He’s shooting 58.3 percent from the field, including 10-for-21 against Nevada, and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
House creates most of his points by cutting and slashing to the basket, opening looks for teammates. His go-to weapon has been a floater in the lane.
“When I see someone step up, I know it’s going up,” House said.
After five straight road games, the Salukis return to Carbondale on Saturday, Nov. 29, to face Arkansas-Little Rock. Tickets are available at Saluk.is/4i3okOe.
“We’re fighting to win. I hope fans pack the Banterra Center when we come back,” House said.
