WOODLAWN — The Woodlawn Cardinals used a strong second half to beat Metro-East Lutheran 66-46 in the season opener for both teams. With the game tied 39-39 midway through the third quarter, the Cardinals seized control scoring 27 of the game’s final 34 points.
Senior guard Kyle Cooper led the way with 27 points in his Woodlawn debut. The Waltonville transfer was 11-12 of free throw line.
Luke McKay and Tyson Frick added 14 points apiece for the Cardinals, who will be off until Saturday when they will open play in the Kaskaskian Classic at Carlyle against Riverview Gardens out of St. Louis.
Kaleb Turney led the Knights with 14 points.
