Carterville holds off Nashville

CARTERVILLE — Maddox Gulley’s drive and bucket off the glass with 3.4 seconds left broke a 73-73 tie and turned out to be the game winner as Carterville beat Nashville 75-73.

The Hornets got a look at a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, but it would not go.

Carterville improves to 8-1 on the season. The Lions were led to by Colton Hawkins’ 23 points. Max Lustenberger added 15 with Amareon Adams and Zach Snow also reaching double figures with 10 points each.

Nashville falls to 6-2. Maddox Ritzel led the Hornets with 21. Gannon Turner added 15 and Palmer Renken 13.

Up next, the Lions will open play as the top seed in the Eldorado Holiday Tournament Friday morning at 8:30 against Carmi-White County. The Hornets will open pool play at the Mater Dei Holiday Friday afternoon at 2:00 against St. Charles West (MO).
