Woodlawn holds off Sparta for Duster Thomas Hoops Classic title

PINCKNEYVILLE — In a game that saw Woodlawn dominate the first half and Sparta dominate the second half, a bucket by Cardinals junior Tyson Frick with :15 was the difference as Woodlawn held on to win its first Duster Thomas Hoops Classic championship, 48-46.

The Cardinals had it all working early, building a 32-15 halftime lead. The Bulldogs rallied to tie the game at 46-46 setting up Frick’s heroics. The Bulldogs had a couple of chances in the final seconds to tie or potentially win the game, but could not convert.

Sparta’s Dariontez Monroe led all scorers with 19 points. Frick, Kyle Cooper, and Luke McKay scored 12 points each to lead Woodlawn, with Cooper being named Tourney MVP.

Up next, Woodlawn (13-0) will host Patoka/Odin in a Midland Trail Conference game. Sparta (11-2) will return to Cahokia Illinois action Monday night at home against Chester.
