Waltonville holds off Marion for another impressive win

MARION — The Waltonville Spartans added to their already impressive postseason-seeding resume with a 49-47 win over Marion Friday night.

The Spartans’ 21st win of the season did not go into the books though until Cam Curry’s midcourt shot at the buzzer rimmed out for the Wildcats.

Gage Peterson led Waltonville with 16 points. Marion’s Makhi House led all scorers with 19, with Curry adding 15.

The Spartans now own three wins over 3A teams this season (Carbondale and Highland the other two), in addition to wins over 2A Carterville (21-2) as well as state-ranked 1A teams Woodlawn (18-3) and Webber twice (17-4). They face more stout tests ahead including Saturday at Pinckneyville with a date against 23-1 Centralia at the Panther Showcase then next Saturday against 21-2 Nashville at the Rich Herrin Classic in Benton.

Marion meanwhile has dropped five straight by a combined total of 17 points. The Wildcats fall to 10-10. They will be back in action Thursday night at Effingham.
