CARTERVILLE — It’s not often you get a chance to see two number one ranked teams in the state go head to head, but softball fans in Carterville Saturday were treated to just that as the 2A #1 Lady Lions welcomed 3A #1 Glenwood for a doubleheader.
Fittingly, the teams split the two games.
In the opener, Glenwood took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but Carterville exploded for four runs. Emi Ford’s two-run double tied the game. A couple of batters later, Colbie Bennett’s RBI single put the Lady Lions on top. Kendall Henrikesen capped the inning with a perfect squeeze bunt.
Illinois signee Cadence Phillips then went out and finished what she started, getting the Titans in order in the seventh, recording her 10th and 11th strikeouts to end the game.
Glenwood junior Sydney Feld was the story of game two. The junior had an RBI single in the first, added a leadoff home run in the fourth, and then broke the game open with a three-run shot in the fifth. Feld finished the game 3-3 with two home runs and five runs batted in. Penn State signee Ryleigh Keil also homered for Glenwood, as the Titans handed Carterville it’s first loss of the season. 6-1 was the final.
Anna Hubbard drove in Lady Lions only run in game two with base hit in the second inning.
With the split, Carterville is now 29-1 on the season. The Lady Lions will face 3A #3 Waterloo Tuesday evening at SIU. Glenwood is now 20-2 on the season.
