MARION — The Cahokia Comanches took over sole possession of first place in the South Seven with a 28-22 win at Marion, where it was the school’s annual Pink Out Game.
The Wildcats had three first half possessions deep inside Cahokia territory, but the Comanches defense was up to the challenge, preventing Marion from scoring on any of those possessions.
Trailing by six points midway through the fourth quarter, Marion again threatened, but again Cahokia’s defense stiffened to preserve the victory.
Nigel Gooden threw for 204 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 50 more yards to lead the Cahokia attack. Marcus Hazell rushed for two touchdowns for Marion, while Callahan Roper was 17-37 passing for 182 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
The Wildcats fall to 3-2, 1-1 in the South Seven. The Comanches improve to 4-1, 2-0 in the conference.
Both teams will be on the road next week as Marion will visit Centralia, while Cahokia will head to Mt. Vernon.
