CHESTER — In a Homecoming game that featured a little bit of everything, Chester senior Tray Peters knocked away a two-point conversion with 1.4 seconds to play to preserve a 38-37 win over previously undefeated Dupo to take over first place in the Illinois Division of the Cahokia Conference.

The pass breakup capped a huge night for Peters who threw two touchdowns, including the go ahead TD with 53.6 seconds to play. He also ran for a touchdown and had two interceptions on defense.

The Yellow Jackets took a 21-0 second quarter lead on Adam Blechle’s halfback pass touchdown to TaShawn Palacio. It was Palacio’s school record 11th receiving touchdown of the season.

Deegan Prater threw a pair of touchdowns to pull Dupo within 21-13 in the third quarter, but Chester tacked on Peters to Zane Eggemyer touchdown and a 34-yard field goal by Karim Landeros to build the lead back to 31-13.

Brady Portell returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown to pull Dupo within 31-21 after three quarters.

A Chester safety made it a one possession game, then Prater scored on a one-yard touchdown run and added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 31-31 with 4:51 to play.

The Yellow Jackets regained the lead on Peters’ 13-yard touchdown pass to Trey McCartney in the game’s final minute, but Prater and the Tigers weren’t done. A 43-yard completion to Carter Lumpkins put Dupo at the Chester six yard line with 12 seconds left. Two plays later, Prater found Thinh Staggs for a three-yard touchdown to make it 38-37 with 1.4 seconds to play.

Dupo went for the win, but Peter swatted away Prater’s pass in the endzone.

Both teams are now 6-1 on the season. The Yellow Jackets can wrap up a perfect conference season with a win at Red Bud. The Tigers will close conference play at home against Sparta/Steeleville.
