Waltonville, Goreville advance to Trico Sectional finals

CAMPBELL HILL — It will be subsectional top seeds Waltonville (30-4) and Goreville (31-4) battling for the Trico 1A Sectional championship Friday night at 7:00 in Campbell Hill.

The Spartans earned their spot in the title game with a 64-43 win over Hardin County. Ryley Stewart led four in double figures for Waltonville with 19 points. Gage Peterson added 12 with Witten Devor and Jagger Mayville each tallying 10.

Bryden Banks led the Cougars with 15. Hardin County finishes the season 26-8.

Goreville’s Nick King goes in for a layup just before halftime in the Blackcats’ win over Sparta.

In what Goreville head coach Todd Tripp deemed an instant classic, the Blackcats held off Sparta in the second Trico semifinal 66-63.

Nick King led the Goreville attack with 28 points, while Dariontez Monroe scored 24 to lead Sparta.

The Bulldogs’ season ended 30-5, a school record for wins in a season.

The sectional final will be a rematch of the championship game of the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament. Goreville won that one 40-39 as King made a free throw with no time on the clock.
